The music of Sebastian Currier (b. 1959) - currently a faculty member at The Juilliard School - is unmistakeably contemporary while remaining very accessible. Impeccable craftsmanship, a capacity to evoke wildly divergent emotional states, a brilliant use of instrumental color, and a sure sense of structure - couched in a fresh harmonic language - characterize the three works on this disc.

Vocalissimus (1991), for soprano, flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and percussion, explores the interpretation of a single text - Wallace Stevens’s "To The Roaring Wind" - through the prism of eighteen different character types, from “Somnambulist” to “Lunatic.” Whispers (1996), for flute, cello, piano, and percussion, is a work of quicksilver rhythmic changes, airy textures and delicately terraced dynamics. Theo’s Sketchbook (1992), for solo piano, traces the musical development and growth of an imaginary composer through a collection of pieces which span nearly his entire lifetime.
