Cancione Sine Textu is a study in sound, texture and articulation. It is subtitled Festino No. 3, belonging to a series of works which I refer to as divertissements. My intention, like a sleight of hand magician, is to absorb the soprano voice into the ensemble. She is hidden in the background rather than existing in the foreground of events. By vocalizing (using mostly vowels) the soprano takes the role of a ‘sound processor’ of sorts, effecting the instruments and hybridizing herself in the process. In some of the more “cantabile” passages, the title of the piece is used as text. Each of the three words are quite meaningful, providing the soprano part with a variety of expressions and affects.
