Singers of kallisti in works of Italian Modernists, UC San Diego

Co-curated by Susan Narucki and Jonathan Hepfer, the program is an exploration of evocative works by the Italian modernists Luigi Dallapiccola, Niccolò Castiglioni and Aldo Clementi. All of the composers have one foot firmly planted in the 20th century and one in the Renaissance. The pieces, presented seamlessly, combine rigor and lyricism, chaos and elegance, complexity and simplicity, the current and the eternal. Featuring soloists of the vocal ensemble kallisti, the program will also include a new work by Kyle Rowan, commissioned as a companion piece to Dallapiccola's masterwork, Piccola Musica Notturna ('A Little Night Music'). Vocal chamber works include Dallapiccola's Divertimento in Quattro Esercizi (1934), Niccolo Castiglioni's Terzina, Auf der Suche nach einem Frischen Wind and Cantus Planus, as well as Aldo Clementi's Madrigale for piano four hands.

kallisti: Sino alla morte, Experimental Theater at Conrad Prebys Music Center, UC San Diego

A "constructed opera" the hour-long fully staged production juxtaposes music by two Italian composers: Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677) and Salvatore Sciarrino (1947-).  Although separated by hundreds of years, each has written vocal music of profound expressivity and intense beauty.

Sciarrino's rarely performed vocal sextet "Le donne di Trachis" (1980) is the cornerstone of the evening. Written for unaccompanied female voices, it draws inspiration from Sophocles' tragic The Women of Trachis. The central mystery of The Women of Trachis lies with Deianeira, the wife of Heracles. Abandoned by her unfaithful husband, she turns to sorcery in desperation, presenting him with a robe whose lining is dyed with a potion that she believes will rekindle his love. But Deianeria is deceived. The robe brings only destruction, and leaves her with a doubly inflicted pain, that of her husband's infidelity coupled with his death, an unintended consequence of her anguish.

Sino alla morte will delve into the complicated psychology of love and desire through exquisite vocal music of the Baroque and Modern eras. Join us for an opportunity to hear the human voice in all its power and richness.

kallisti draws its singers from the graduate program in Contemporary Music Performance at UC San Diego and distinguished guest artists. UCSD Professor of Music Susan Narucki directs the production, with guest music director Stephen Lewis.

World premieres - Ana Lara, Soneto 30 / Ricardo Zohn, Soneto 18 / Víctor Ibarra, Soneto 26 / Georgina Derbez, Soneto 43 / Alejandro Gómez Villa-Gómez, Soneto 9 / Hilda Paredes, Soneto 129 / Arturo Fuentes, Soneto 116 / Gonzalo Macías, Soneto 138 Ignacio Baca Lobera, Soneto 76

Everything is enigma in Shakespeare, game of masks and identities, crossed roles on stage, echoes of other voices and authorships, real fictions and fictional chronicles about the author in his escapades of wandering comedian. Could he be different describing the alchemy of love, exploring the peaks and depths of passion? The most intimate Shakespeare is presented to us in his one hundred and fifty-four legendary sonnets. Metaphysics of eternal love, as Agustín García Calvo, one of his major Spanish translators, would say: because “passion and grace invade these sonnets with so much truth and life”.

Nine of those poems will transit to the sonic discourse of some of the most relevant Mexican composers of the recent generations. A FIC production in collaboration with FONCA (National Endowment for Culture and Arts) that will feature celebrated performers: Susan Narucki (soprano) and Randall Scarlata (baritone), two of the greatest voices of contemporary concert music, accompanied by Ensamble Redes, formed by teachers of the Cervantine Academy.
